Our engagement at the Epic Hub in Doncaster marked the second instalment of our Fast Trax workshops, aptly named ‘Open Mic’. Tailored for youths aged 12 to 17, these dynamic sessions spanned three hours and were hosted weekly at Epic Doncaster’s hub in the Frenchgate Centre starting on May 15th, 2023, and concluding at the end of January 2024. Witnessing enthusiastic participation from sizable cohorts, our primary objectives were multifaceted. Beyond merely providing access to recording equipment, we aimed to nurture the creative talents of young individuals who might otherwise encounter barriers to such resources. Throughout the project, we facilitated the development of their songwriting and vocal performance skills, with the ultimate goal of producing a recorded track by the end of each session.
The project served as a catalyst for personal growth, fostering increased self-assurance among participants while facilitating meaningful connections within the artistic community. As the project unfolded, it was heartening to observe collaborative partnerships emerging among the young artists, many of whom have continued their musical endeavours beyond the project’s formal end.
